ProductsKanayo DST
Kanayo DST is a Decision Support System to support physicians, specialists and other health care providers during daily patient care. A system of alarms, reminders, and advice, Kanayo DST aids the health care provider in following best practice guidelines.
About Kanayo DST
Kanayo’s Decision Support Tool suite (DST) allows healthcare clinicians to quickly translate evidence based guidelines into an electronic format which can then be embedded or integrated into any existing Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. The DST’s Execution Engine, operating seamlessly in the background, will subsequently provide clinicians with appropriate decision support information on the basis of patient specific data.
Drawing on primary research from Stanford, Columbia and Harvard Universities, Kanayo’ proprietary DST system integrates the following modules:
- Guideline Authoring/Translation Tool: Based on a variation of the GLIF3 guideline graphical representation language, the DST translation tool enables domain experts to create abstract flow charts of complex guidelines and then create computable specifications to trigger the information contained in those guidelines.
- Terminology Editor Tool: Allows users to define and edit, vocabularies, terminologies, ontologies, etc. Provides a graphical view of relationships and hierarchies for respective vocabularies.
- Execution Engine: Integrated into existing EMR systems the DST Execution Engine recommends specific clinical tasks to be performed and assists in clinical decision making based on the scheduling of primitive execution tasks and the evaluation of decision criteria. The execution Engine relies on either pre-existing or easily configurable APIs to integrate into the EMR system deployed by the end user.
Kanayo DST systems can:
- Assess if all measures have been taken for an individual patient, based on hospital protocols and evidenced-based medical knowledge;
- Autonomously establish the right diagnosis for a patient;
- Warn doctors and nurses in case of faulty treatment;
- Give a second opinion during treatment and care of a patient;
- Remind health care providers and/or patients to take medication or undergo treatment.
Systems that are designed with Kanayo DST are based on guidelines and working arrangements that describe how a physician or a nurse should act when treating patients. Kanayo DST uses these guidelines combined with patient information available in clinical information systems (such as EMRs) in order to warn immediately if a dangerous situation might occur or to advise on the best possible treatment.
Developing Guidelines
One of the main advantages of Kanayo DST is the Guideline Authoring/Translation Tool. This tool allows health care providers (e.g., doctors, nursing staff and hospital administrators) to define and maintain guidelines by using ‘drag-and-drop’ techniques.
Guidelines that are entered in the Guideline Authoring/Translation Tool are automatically processed by the Kanayo DST Execution Engine. This module interfaces with external patient information systems such as Electronic Medical Record (EMR), pharmacy or laboratory information systems to determine whether the guidelines are followed or not. When the DST Execution Engine concludes that advice might be helpful, this advice (e.g., reminders or warnings) will be given to the health care providers.
Kanayo DST has been used to develop and implement decision support systems for various medical specialties such as Critical Care, Family Practice, Cardiology, Psychiatry, Diabetes and Hypertension.
